Renew means to restart after an interruption. That’s a cool way to think about it. Because there are so many things that we renew before there is an interruption. We renew subscriptions because we don’t want them to lapse. We renew our operators license because we don’t want them to penalize us. However, we often wait for that interruption to renew our selves, our spiritual sense.
Probably one of the most famous images in the world, looking down into Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives. Three of the holiest sites for the three Abrahamic traditions are in this image; the Haram al-Sharif (Temple Mount), the Western Wall (wailing wall), and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. To each of these locations stream hundreds each Friday to renew themselves in their own faith traditions; Islam, Judaism and Christianity. And just like renewing all those things, renewal of our self is something that we consciously have to put our selves on the path towards. Seldom, perhaps never, maybe occasionally, renew happens spontaneously. But mostly, I believe renewal only occurs once we take that tentative step of faith towards God, and then God takes over. Step toward the thin place of renew.
